Do you ever feel like your beliefs are being yanked around, tugged upon by first one ideology then another?
Life can be confusing. People are bewildering. Some believe one way, some believe another. Some change what they believe to suit those around them. And some don’t know what they believe.
If you try to make sense of life by latching on to the beliefs of others, or on social trends, media opinions, and government ideology, you will undoubtedly become confused and feel as if you are being intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually jerked around. The apostle Paul described it in his letter to the Christians in Ephesus as tossed here and there by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming. (Ephesians 4:14)
So how do you not let yourself be “tossed here and there”? How do you determine what to believe? Paul gives a clue in the very next verse: Christians are to grow up in all aspects of Him who is the head, even Christ (v 15). Note that Paul is addressing Christians, so the salvation issue has already been settled. Since you cannot know God unless you have accepted His offer of salvation through Jesus Christ and received the Holy Spirit, that is the first step to understanding truth. God desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. (1 Timothy 2:4)
The saving and the coming to the knowledge of truth are supernatural works of God through the Holy Spirit:
Therefore He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them. (Hebrews 7:25)
But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all truth… (John 16:13)
So instead of focusing on what others believe, settle your relationship with Christ, and commit to learn who He is and how He works. Then you will be focused on the truth. Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” (John 14:6)
God, and therefore truth, are unchanging. For I, the LORD, do not change… (Malachi 3:6) Truth does not change because of or hinge upon human thought or belief. It does not answer to relativists, secularists, humanists, atheists, or any other -ists because truth is a person – Jesus Christ, the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end. (Revelation 22:13)
Truth is the plumb line by which to judge all things in this life. It is the rock on which you can plant your feet and the lifeline to which you can cling through the ravaging winds of relativism, secularism, humanism, atheism, and every other empty -ism. Seek the truth in the Lord so you can say goodbye to being jerked around and hello to being securely anchored in truth for this earthly life and for eternity – the only good kind of here and there.
