This isn’t one of those verses that gives you a warm fuzzy or that you memorize for encouragement in a moment of doubt, but it is the truth:
The wicked strut about on every side
When vileness is exalted among the sons of men.
In pride, the wicked lift themselves up. They boast about their evil deeds. I think of the woman who videoed her abortion and posted it on the internet. Not the actual abortion itself, mind you, for her intent was certainly not to expose the horrifying truth about the brutal murder of her child. Her intent was to psychotically assert that killing her child was actually a joyful event.
Even in the most depraved society imaginable, who would ever think that anyone could ever in a million years ever have the need to string such hideous words together as I just did in the previous paragraph?
Vileness exalted. The wicked strutting about. Evil masquerading as good. Sin disguised as goodness. Who can stand?
Again I remember this verse:
Burning indignation has seized me because of the wicked,
Who forsake Your law.
What’s the believer supposed to do when overwhelmed with such evil? When it appears that we are losing and the enemy is winning? I’ve written about this before. But today the following passage that I’ve read countless times spoke to me anew.
Do not fret because of evildoers,
Be not envious toward wrongdoers.
For they will wither quickly like the grass
And fade like the green herb.
TRUST in the Lord and do good;
DWELL in the land and cultivate faithfulness.
DELIGHT yourself in the Lord;
And He will give you the desires of your heart.
COMMIT your way to the Lord,
Trust also in Him, and He will do it.
He will bring forth your righteousness as the light
And your judgment as the noonday.
Psalm 37:1-6 (All caps mine)
Listed in this passage is a prescription for dealing with life on this often dark planet:
- Trust – Trust and depend on the Lord for and in everything. Utter, complete belief that the Lord is more than capable to accomplish what concerns you.
- Dwell – Keep going, stay faithful, and cause faithfulness to increase where you are. Because of and in spite of the unrighteous.
- Delight – Find your joy and delight in the Lord. Deep, abiding, fulfilling joy in Jesus, no matter what is going on around you.
- Commit – Make a commitment to trust and honor the Lord with every step you take and every decision you make. In all things, put Him first. No matter what everyone else is doing.
Then His righteousness in you will triumph. His justice for you will prevail. The dark shadows of evil will flee and wickedness will be vanquished in the glorious light of His righteousness and judgment.
Evil loses. We win. Never doubt it!
