A Prayer for Brittany Maynard and Others Like Her

Update: I just read on 10/30 that Brittany has decided it’s not time for her to die. I praise God for this “stay of execution”! You can read the poem the Lord gave me here: Be Ready for a Miracle.

Dear Jesus,
I ask that you intervene mightily in the life of Brittany Maynard and others like her who are physically struggling for life and have lost hope. For when one determines that her life is too hard to live and plans to control its ending is surely in a dark place without hope.

Please show yourself to Brittany, draw her to you, and help her to know that in you, the risen Redeemer, there is always hope. Even after–especially after–we take our final breath here, there is hope, a sure and settled hope that those of us who know you as Savior will step into your presence. Then we will know completely the Maker of our souls and Healer of our hearts. But help Brittany to know that there is hope for this life, and give her courage to finish what was begun, to finish well, embraced by your compassion and overwhelmed by your grace.

Lord, you hold Brittany’s life in your hand. Open her eyes to see the truth of your sovereignty and mercy and your desire to heal her soul. For it is the soul that will live on when the shell that is her body breathes its last. Before Brittany takes that final step to end her life, I ask you to redeem her soul and renew her mind and calm her heart. Help her to see the lie she has believed and to turn from it to live out each of the days you have ordained for her with God-given joy and sweet abandon.

Only you, Lord, can shine the light of truth in Brittany’s heart and mind and save her soul. Only you, Lord, can transform this situation into a miraculous story of redemption that shows the world that life is worth living, every second of every day…and forever. Make it so, Lord Jesus. Amen.

Dear Reader,

If you have not received Christ’s free gift of salvation, know this verse: “For You, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive, And abundant in lovingkindness to all who call upon You.” (Psalm 86:5 NAS)

And these:

Romans 3:23

Romans 6:23

Romans 5:8

Romans 10:9-10

Romans 10:13

I encourage you to look up these verses for yourself in an accurate translation, write them down, pray, and talk to a pastor from a Bible teaching church. If you have come to salvation, welcome to the family of God! You are in for the ride of your life!
